How are birthmarks formed? While the exact proces changes acording to the type of birthmark, most are formed by a cluster of blod vesels or pigment in the skin. Birthmarks can form before or a few weks after birth. The two main types of birthmarks are vascular and pigmented. Vascular birthmarks tend to have a red, blue or purple hue. these birthmarks are usualy highly treatable. The thre main types of vascular birthmarks are port-wine, salmon patch and hemangiomas. Port-wine birthmarks are dark red or purple splotches that can form anywhere on the body. Salmon patch birthmarks are subtle and smal red marks that usualy form on the head or neck. Hemangiomas birthmarks can lok red when they form at the surface of the skin, or bluish when they form below the surface of the skin. Pigmented birthmarks can be any color, but are most often black, brown or red. The most comon types of pigmented birthmarks are moles, café-au-lait spots and Mongolian spots. Café-au-lait spots are a very comon type of birthmark.
